Similarities between Jim's and Huck's Run Away

There are many similarities between Jim and Huck's run away. Jim was escaping from Mrs. Watson because he over hears her talking about sending him to New Orleans. Jim runs because he does not want to be caught as a run away slave. Huck, however, wanted to escape civilization. He does not feel comfortable in the way that society is run and he has many insightful thoughts even though he does not always know it. Jim and Huck both are running for freedom of civilization. Jim, being a slave, does not get treated equally like everyone else does. Jim and Huck believe that this is not right and not how civilization should be run. Both of them just want to be comfortable and to be happy. I think that is what freedom really is. Jim and Huck both believe that society is not run the right way. They think that if they run away they will escape the restrictions that are placed on both of them. For Jim this is being a slave to Mrs. Watson and for Huck it has to do with becoming civilized such as sitting up strait in his chair and not smoking, as well as other things. They both feel that running away will give them the opportunity to do whatever they want to do and live how they want to live. Jim and Huck believe society has made some bad decisions that they both do not agree with. I also believe that they feel they can not change society. If they thought they could bring change to society there would be no need for them to run away. This proves that they think society is too far in the wrong direction to ever be changed. As Jim and Huck spend more time together they find out that they are more a like then they thought. One of the reasons Huck ran away was because of his father. Pap was not what a father should be to a son. Jim becomes a father figure in some regards to Huck. They both left, escaping society, and made a new friendship.

  1. I agree with you that there funning away is similar because they wanted to escape people that were telling them what to do. Miss Watson constantly told Huck when and how to do things, while Jim was a slave and was told what to do daily. Also, I never realized how Jim becomes sort of a father figure to Huck after they run away. It seems like Huck enjoys Jim's prescense more than he did Paps.

  2. Do you think that they are running for freedom of civilization or from the structure of the society they had just come from. I look at civilization as having a much larger meaning. Good point about them not believing they could change society. Too bad slavery doesn't come with the power to construct change in the group of people holding you in bondage.
